[PÉRAU (Gabriel-Louis)] The Order of Freemasons... - Lot 209 - Briscadieu
[PÉRAU (Gabriel-Louis)] The Order of Freemasons betrayed, and the Secret of the Mopses revealed. Amsterdam, se, 1771. In-12 : XXXII, 195pp. - 32pp, (1) (Chansons de la très vénérable confrérie des Francs-maçons) with 10 plates out of text and 5 sheets of unnumbered musical staves. Contemporary marbled fawn calf, smooth spine decorated, black title-piece, headband faded, gilt fillet on the edges, corners dulled, small leather tears at one corner, marbled edges. The original edition appeared in 1742 under the title "Le secret des francs-maçons". The various reworked editions were generally anonymous. This (apparently) anti-masonic work constitutes for some modern historians a documentary source on Freemasonry at the time of its introduction in France in the first decades of the 18th century and describes the essential rites practiced in France at the time. To write his book, the author specifies that he lived among Freemasons for about ten years, so it would not be surprising if he was not a brother! Indeed, the great precision of the rites and terminology used shows that he was really aware of the practices of all these ceremonies. The part devoted to the Order of Mopses is particularly interesting; this mixed lodge, by not requiring an oath, thought to escape the excommunication launched in 1736 against Freemasonry by Pope Clement VII (Dorbon 2493, Caillet 8506) Provenance: Ex-libris printed Commander Ph. Jullien in Nimes and wet stamp Philippe de St Albin.
