Provence - Convulsionary GIRARD-CADIÈRE... - Lot 217 - Briscadieu
Provence - Convulsionary GIRARD-CADIÈRE CASE General collection of documents concerning the trial between the Miss Cadière, of the City of Toulon; and Father Girard, Jesuit. Slne [Aix, Paris, La Haye, Nancy, Viviers, etc.], 1731-33. 2 volumes in folio. Contains 40 factums and libels in separate paginations; some texts added in ink on the table pages of the second volume (XXIII pieces against XVII initially announced). Contemporary marbled fawn basane, spine ribbed and decorated, red title-pieces, bronze tomaisons, 2 headpieces damaged, triple cold fillet on the boards, rubbing and epidermis, gilt roulette on the edges, red edges. A good copy. First edition in folio of the documents of this famous trial between Catherine Cadière, accused of witchcraft, and her confessor, the Jesuit Jean-Baptiste Girard, suspected of having abused his spiritual power. The young Catherine Cadière was attracted by the sermons and charisma of Father Jean-Baptiste Girard, whom she met in 1728. She was quickly distinguished by surprising manifestations (stigmata, visions, etc.) and was presented as a saint by the Jesuit, who then perhaps abused her. Her convulsions then aroused the interest of the courts. A first verdict, rendered on September 11, 1731, condemned her to the gallows; a second, on October 10, cleared her. The jubilant crowds in Aix and Toulon greeted their heroine and booed Father Girard, who was himself acquitted by the judges (Caillet 1886). For the Jansenists, she became a symbol of the power and corruption of the Jesuits.
