Magic FIARD (Jean-Baptiste, abbé) Philosophical... - Lot 231 - Briscadieu
Magic FIARD (Jean-Baptiste, abbé) Philosophical Letters on Magic. Corrected and expanded edition. Paris, Grégoire & Thouvenin, 1803. In-8: 130pp; 2 manuscript leaves in fine. Bound with string. Grey blue cover. Third edition, the first was published in 1791. Abbé Fiard, a former Burgundian Jesuit specializing in demonology, was one of the last French writers who believed in the reality of magic. He tried to demonstrate that witchcraft was involved not only in magic shows, but also in the scientific discoveries of his time. At the end of these letters is reprinted the curious Petition of the Parliament of Rouen in 1670, in which he asks the king to give free rein to justice in all matters concerning those accused of magic and sorcery, and to rescind his ordinance by which he commuted the death penalty to perpetual banishment.
