Atlas - Cartography ORTELIUS (Abraham) Theatre of the Universe containing the Maps of the whole World. With a brief declaration of them. Antwerp [Anvers], Plantin, 1581. In folio: engraved title, 5f. (including portrait of Ortelius), 91/93 double-page plates mounted on tabs (with presentation text), 6f. Note the superb maps of Europe, Asia, Africa and especially America. Missing plates 17 and 18 (French provinces), map 49 with tear (not missing), a few strips of paper reinforcing the margins of some maps, one free plate. Some leaves slightly browned, light banding to outer margin of some plates. Text ruled. Bound in contemporary Dutch stiff vellum, handwritten title on spine, geometrical decoration of cold fillets on boards. Second edition of 1581 with 91/93 maps. The first French edition of 1572 contains 53 maps. All these editions are known for their rarity. The publication of the Terrarium Theatrum Orbis in Antwerp in 1570 represented an important step in the history of cartography. Abraham Ortell or Ortelius, Flemish cartographer who, along with Mercator, is the great founder of cartography. Ortelius, a man of great learning, earned the nickname Ptolemy of the 16th century (Chadenat I, 2716)
