Empire MARSHAL GROUCHY Letter about poaching in the forest of Andaine in the department of Orne, especially during hounds in which the Marshal participated. Dated 29 January 1831. A4 format, 1 page. Emmanuel de Grouchy, Marquis de Grouchy (1766-1847), French general of the Revolution and the Empire, Marshal of the Empire, Count of the Empire, Grand Eagle of the Legion of Honour, Peer of France. Grouchy entered the royal artillery corps in Strasbourg at the age of 13 in 1780 and was promoted to second lieutenant in the La Fère artillery regiment in 1781. Moving to the cavalry in 1782, Grouchy was promoted to the rank of captain3 in the Royal Foreign Cavalry Regiment, before being appointed in 1786 to the Scottish company of the Royal Guard, with the rank of second lieutenant. In 1812, General Count Grouchy was given command of one of the three cavalry corps of the Grande Armée. He commanded the 3rd cavalry corps during the Russian campaign. Replaced in the rearguard by Davout, Grouchy would have received the command of the sacred squadron, a cavalry unit composed of officers, which protected the Emperor during the retreat.
