TISSOT (J. James) The life of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Illustrated with 365 compositions from the four Gospels with notes and explanatory drawings by J. James TISSOT. Tours, Mame, 1896. 2 volumes in folio. Luxury edition, limited edition of 10,000 copies, one of 980 on large vellum from the Papeteries du Marais, with a double suite of plates out of text, black and coloured vignettes in the text. Very white paper. Midnight blue morocco with nets signed MEYER, spine ribbed, titles and boxes gilt, double framed with geometrical decoration of double gilt nets, double gilt net on the edges, brown chagrin counterskins, beautiful mosaic cross in the centre surrounded by gilt garlands, geometrical decoration in the margins, large garland in the frame, coat of arms of the grand duke Paul Alexandrovitch in the corners, moiré unbleached silk end-papers, gilt edges with Maltese crosses, in sheathed cases. A very fine copy. James Tissot, painter and engraver, devoted himself since 1888 to biblical subjects. One of the great publications of the Mame house. Provenance: Arms of Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovitch (1860-1919), Russian prince, member of the Romanov dynasty, cavalry general of the Imperial Army of Russia, sixth son and last child of Emperor Alexander II of Russia.
