VERY RARE GOLD LACQUERED WOOD PANEL ON BLACK... - Lot 33 - Briscadieu
VERY RARE GOLD LACQUERED WOOD PANEL ON BLACK BACKGROUND China, mid 18th century. Representing a view of Canton and the Pearl River with in the foreground the fort of the Yellow Pagoda and the harbour of Canton where many junks and western ships are anchored; missing and raised lacquer. 85 cm x 55 cm. This panel can be dated to the first half or middle of the 18th century in comparison with a painting executed around 1760/1770 from the British Library collections where one can see the two lines of fortifications and the different gates. The known paintings of Canton made in 1800 show the buildings of the western trading posts on the waterfront, absent on our lacquered panel. Two similar panels are known, the first dated to the first half of the 18th century, of the same dimensions and showing a view of Macau (it could be the counterpart of the present lot), exhibited by Jorge Welsh in London in 2016, the second, also of similar dimensions, top of a chest, depicting Macau and coming from the Alpoim Calvao collection in Cascais, Portugal.
