Jean-Nicolas SERVANDONI (1695-1766) Architectural... - Lot 46 - Briscadieu
Jean-Nicolas SERVANDONI (1695-1766) Architectural caprice with the remains of an ancient temple, a statue of the Nile in the foreground and a couple of characters. Gouache. 44 x 58 cm. Signed lower right, on a reversed stele "Servandoni". Numerous scratches, losses of material and folds. Beautiful Louis XVI period frame (chips in the gilding). We thank Mr Jérôme de La Gorce for confirming the attribution of this gouache to Servandoni. "This Servandoni is a man that all the gold of Peru would not enrich. He is the Panurge of Rabelais, who had fifteen thousand ways of collecting, and thirty thousand ways of spending. A great machinist, a great architect, a good painter, a sublime decorator, there is not one of his talents that has not earned him immense sums. However, he has nothing and will never have anything. The king, the nation, the public have given up the project of saving him from misery. » Denis Diderot
