Bénédict MASSON (Sombernon, near Dijon, 1819-Paris, 1893) - Lot 136
Bénédict MASSON (Sombernon, near Dijon, 1819-Paris, 1893) Riders crossing a ford in a mountainous landscape (scene from the story of Hannibal). Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. 55 x 46,5 cm. Good condition (original canvas and frame). Around 1860. Pupil of Paul Delaroche, painter of scenes with sometimes strange atmospheres, Bénédict Masson is known for a large historical painting representing Hannibal crossing the Alps (1861, Musée de Chambéry). Around this composition with many characters, he painted pictures showing warriors looking for their way in similar landscapes, made of high rocky walls probably imaginary. A painting very similar to ours is preserved in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon.
