Aimé-Jules DALOU (1838-1902) La Boulonnaise allaitant (un enfant), 1st proof, sketch of the model created around [1894], itself a variant of the terra cotta model exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in [1877]. Sculpted group. Bronze proof with a shaded brown patina. Lost wax casting. Early edition. Signed DALOU, bears the circular stamp SUSSE Frères Editeurs Paris, the mark SUSSE Frs Edts Paris and the inscriptions Cire Perdue and 1ère épreuve on the mound. 22,4 x 12,2 x 9,5 cm. Note: This subject is a variant of the masterpiece Boulonnaise allaitant son enfant, a life-size terracotta sculpture that the artist exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1877 under the number 1465. The original terracotta model carries the child on her left arm. Acquired in 1876 by George John Browne (1820-1896), third Marquess of Sligo, and remaining in the family ever since, it reappeared on the art market in 2014 at a Sotheby's sale in London. It was acquired by the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa for £362,500. Art historians and specialists in Dalou's work agree that the variant of this sculpture, now carrying her child on her right arm, was made around 1894. The Musée du Petit Palais has a plaster copy, acquired in 1905 from Georgette Dalou, the artist's daughter. A contract dated 30 June 1902, the same year as Dalou's death, was signed between the Susse foundry and his descendant for the production of bronze sculptures. In this contract, the 1894 variant bears the number 16 and is entitled La Boulonnaise allaitant un enfant. The Musée d'Orsay holds the master model of our sculpture, the sketch of La Boulonnaise allaitant, from the Susse Collection. Related museums & works: - A copy identical to our work, the master model in bronze, from the Susse collection, measuring 22.7 cm in height, is kept in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay under the inventory number RF 4323 - A 65.5 cm high bronze model from the Susse collection with realistic modelling is in the Musée d'Orsay collections under inventory number RF 4324. - A 67 cm high plaster copy with realistic modelling is kept by the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris under the inventory number PPS 299. Exhibition: Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris, 1902. The plaster copy, now in the collections of the Petit Palais, was presented there outside the catalogue and as part of an exhibition in tribute to the artist who had just died.
