[HOOGHE (Romeyn de)] - de CHERTABLON] La... - Lot 130 - Briscadieu
[HOOGHE (Romeyn de)] - de CHERTABLON] La Manière de se préparer bien à la Mort par des considérations sur la Cène, la Passion, & la Mort de Jésus-Christ, avec de très belles estampes emblématiques. Antwerp, Gallet, 1700. In-4 : 63pp, 1f, 10f. (explanations of the plates in Dutch); illustrated with 42 engraved plates by Romeyn de Hooghe, divided into three groups of 13 plates printed on laid paper with each a frontispiece A, B and C. Engravings of a beautiful intense black. Old rigid vellum. A good copy. First edition of these engravings, adapted by Chertablon from the Miroir de la bonne mort by David de La Vigne (Amsterdam, 1673), but different. Represents the phases of the agony of a man who must prepare himself for death following the example of the Passion of Christ which appears in the form of pictures brought and presented by one or more angels; several scenes show us the agonizing man facing his conscience, tormented by different kinds of devils, while all his entourage sleeps; some plates would be worthy of appearing in a "Dance of the Dead. Scenes mixing the real and the supernatural. A dying man on his deathbed is assisted by his relatives, ecclesiastics, his guardian angel but also harassed by demons. Angels appearing from the clouds present him with paintings of the life of Christ. Very nice edition of these very curious engravings. Provenance: printed bookplate, initials TS at the legend "Sage".
