Paris, Eugène et Victor Penaud, 1849-50. 12 volumes in-8 : 2f. ,XVI pp.,380 pp. (typographical singularities : pagination errors between the chapters "Première Communion" and "Deux années de Délire - Occupations et Chimères", this last chapter with reworked text and parts of texts hidden by later leaves, the text being however totally in conformity with the original text) / 2f, 364 pp. / 2f. 384 pp. / 2f. 368 pp. / 2f. 464 pp. / 2f. 468 pp. / 2f. 488 pp. / 2f. 528 pp. / 2f. 424 pp. / 2f. 496 pp. - 2f. 508 pp. / 2f. 416 pp. Freckles more or less strong in places. Cutting on the faux-title seeming to hide a provenance. Well complete with the editor's foreword, the warning, the letter to Delloye and the list of subscribers. ½ posterior basane, spine ribbed, red title pieces, chestnut tomaisons, red edges. Some foxing. First edition of one of the most important texts of French literature. It appeared a few months after the death of Chateaubriand, who had given the rights to a company of subscribers formed by H.-L. Delloye. Complete with the list of subscribers and the warning which were removed when the balance of this edition passed to another publisher. A very rare copy with some peculiarities, notably errors in pagination, formatting and layout. Conforms to the chapters announced in the table, but totally different paginations. The text, after verification, is however strictly identical to the original edition. Provenance : Printed bookplate of the writer Marcel Prévost with the motto "connaître son bonheur".
