Anthropology - Binding signed Belz-Niédrée RODIER... - Lot 313 - Briscadieu
Anthropology - Binding signed Belz-Niédrée RODIER (Gabriel) Antiquity of human races. Reconstitution of the chronology and history of primitive peoples by the examination of original documents and by astronomy. Paris, Amyot, 1864. In-8 : VIII, 454pp. Well-white paper. ½ red chagrin of the time signed BELZ NIÉDRÉE, spine with decorated nerves, figure of the Duke of Mouchy between boxes, shock on a cup, gilt head. Census of chronologies, mythologies and beliefs of the main peoples of antiquity (Egyptians, Greeks, Chaldeans, Iranians, Parthians, Hebrews, Indians...). In appendix, numerous and interesting notes (discovery of fire, on the cycle of the seven days of the week, hymn to the Supreme Art...). Close to the royal and then imperial residence of Compiègne, the castle of Mouchy (Oise), as well as its domain, was embellished and enlarged in the XIXth century, on the will of the Noailles family. In the middle of the century, Henri de Noailles and then his son, Antoine, successive dukes of Mouchy, entrusted the young architect Hippolyte Destailleur with the construction. The second half of the century saw two major phases of work (1855-1860 and 1860-1864) aimed at giving the historic Renaissance château the prestige of a great noble residence. As connoisseurs of the Renaissance style, Destailleur recreated a sculpted decor inspired by historical models and the influence of the commissioning family. The Mouchy building site has a special place in the careers of both men. The castle is now destroyed. Provenance: Mouchy library (engraved bookplate; Techener, Catalogue of the Mouchy castle library, 1872, n° 1904). Antoine Just Léon Marie de Noailles (1841-1909), 6th Spanish duke of Mouchy, 5th French duke of Mouchy and prince-duc de Poix. Figure of the Duke of Mouchy on the back.
