[BIBLE] - KRAUSS (Johann Ulrich) Historischer... - Lot 494 - Briscadieu
[BIBLE] - KRAUSS (Johann Ulrich) Historischer Bilder-Bibel Erster Theil, in sich haltend die Abbildung der Historien aller Patriarchen des Buchs Mose. Augsburg, Krauss, 1705 (Followed by) Heilige Augen- und Gemüths-Lust vorstellend Alle Sonn- Fest- und Feyrtägliche nicht nur Evangelien... Augsburg, Kraus, [1706]. Several parts in one volume in folio: 2f., engraved plates with 2 representations numbered from 1 to 135 (number 60 in the numbering twice, thus a total of 136 plates) - 5f. (including a frontispiece), 120f. Engraved each with 2 representations (and an unnumbered frontispiece leaf). Contemporary fawn granite calf, spine ribbed and decorated, small restoration at the head, black title-piece, triple gilt fillet framing the boards with fleurons in spandrels, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt roulette inside, gilt edges. A very good copy. Two works gathered in one volume. Third edition of the illustrated Bible: "Of all the illustrated Bibles published to date, this one is the one with the most sumptuous features. It brings out all the richness of the forms and ideas of the Baroque period". Each scene is again indicated allegorically and emblematically in the lower half. Kraus not only drew inspiration from the French engravers of the late seventeenth century, but also expanded the illustrations of biblical themes around emblematic representations, which had an impact, among other things, on the design of the postilles he published. The first edition appeared in 1698. For the second work: First edition and superb deluxe copy of Krauss' emblematic interpretation of biblical scenes, which represents one of the highlights of the Baroque period in Southern Germany. This monumental emblem book was conceived as a sequel to his famous illustrated Bible or Bilderbibel, and follows the same illustrative formula, in which the upper part of each plate contains an illustration of a biblical scene and the lower part a circular emblem engraving. Johann Ulrich Krauss was one of the most famous engravers and publishers in Augsburg in the latter part of the 17th century. Provenance: printed bookplate, initials TS at the legend "Sage".
