Some passages underlined. Posterior stiff vellum, handwritten title on spine, small lack of skin at head, edges speckled with red. Translation of these "Philosophical Furnaces" (original edition in German, 1646-1649), one of the most remarkable works on chemistry and metallurgy of the 17th century. Glauber was at the initiative of many technical advances in chemistry, including some improvements of distillation furnaces. Deals mainly with the spirit of salt to which the author attributes many virtues, the manufacture of precious stones and distillation. Illustrated with 3 folding plates and 8 full-page woodcuts or in texto representing philosophical furnaces, retorts and other utensils.
