LA BRUYÈRE (Jean de) The Characters of Theophrastus and La Bruyère. With notes by M. Coste. Paris, Hochereau; Panckoucke, 1765. In-4; illustrated with a frontispiece portrait by L. J. Cathelin after Saint Jean and engraved vignettes after Gravelot. A copy with large margins. Contemporary fawn glazed calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red title-piece, a cracked bit at the head, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, double gilt fillet on the edges, interior roulette, gilt edges. A fine copy. Beautiful edition published after the one of Pierre Coste of 1739 containing the key, numerous and developed notes, unpublished material and various pieces.
