Red morocco from the library of Édouard Rahir MARGUERITE de VALOIS Memoirs of Marguerite de Valois, queen of France and Navarre, to which we added her Praise, that of Monsieur de Bussy & the Fortune of the Court. Liège, Broncart, 1713. In-12 : 4f., 459pp. 8f. (table) ; frontispiece portrait engraved by Causé. Contemporary red morocco, gilt fillets, title and small irons on smooth spine, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt roulette on the edges and inside, gilt edges. Enlarged edition edited by Jean Godefroy, who added a eulogy of Marguerite by Pierre de Bourdeille, seigneur de Brantôme (who originally incited the queen to undertake the writing of her memoirs), the eulogy of Brantôme by Bussy d'Amboise, and La Fortune de la Cour, by Pierre Dampmartin (first published in 1592 under the title Du bonheur de la cour et vraye félicité de l'homme, later revised and expanded by Sorel). Marguerite de Valois, daughter of Henri II and Catherine de Médicis, was married to Henri de Navarre (future Henri IV) one week before the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre. Her memoirs were "admirably written" and "rank among the best of the 16th century". (Brunet III, 1420)(Tchemerzine VII, 412). Provenance: Copy of the library of Édouard Rahir, with his ex-libris. It took no less than 8 years to disperse this important library.
