PAULIN OF NOLE (or Saint Paulin) S. Pontii... - Lot 691 - Briscadieu
PAULIN OF NOLE (or Saint Paulin) S. Pontii Meropii Paulini Nolani Episcopi Opera Digesta in II. Tomos. Paris, Couterot, 1685. 2 volumes in one in-4, portrait frontispiece. Contemporary speckled tan calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red title-piece, triple cold fillet framing the boards, gilt roulette on the edges, red edges. Paulin of Nole (Bordeaux, circa 353 - Nole, 431), Gallo-Roman aristocrat and poet who, after a brilliant political career, embraced a religious life by becoming a priest and then bishop of Nole. He is in his time the emblematic example of an aristocratic conversion to Christian asceticism. An important figure in the late Roman Empire marked by barbarian invasions and the revival of paganism around 390, Pauline is venerated by the Catholic and Orthodox Churches as a saint.
