PERRAULT (Charles) Les Hommes Illustres qui ont paru en France pendant ce siècle, avec leurs portraits au naturel. Paris, Dezallier, 1696-1700. 2 volumes in folio; illustrated with an engraved false title, a frontispiece portrait of the author, and 102 full-page portraits with mirror text. Engravings by Lubin, Edelinck, Van Schuppen and Duflos. The two censored portraits of Arnauld and Pascal appear, with their texts, at the end of the first volume. Contemporary fawn granite calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red title-pieces, gilt roulettes on the edges, red speckled edges. Beautiful copy in contemporary binding. First edition of this famous work, complete with its 102 full-page portraits including the two censored portraits of Arnauld and Pascal (with their text leaves). Indeed, the censor removed before publication these portraits to replace them. This copy has managed to remain complete, the two censored portraits appear as in the copies cited by Brunet (IV, 509). Provenance: Manuscript bookplate Deflandel and an unidentified printed bookplate (3 stars, 3 wavy fess, a crescent).
