First edition RESTIF de la BRETONNE (Nicolas Edme) Les Gynographes, or ideas of two honest women on a project of regulation, proposed to all Europe, to put women in their place, & to operate the happiness of both sexes, with historical and justifying notes, followed by the names of famous women. La Haye, Gosse & Pinet ; Humblot, 1777. In-8 : VIII, 567pp. Contemporary marbled fawn calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red title page, headbands faded, cold fillet on the boards, spotting and small tears on the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, red edges. First edition, printed at 1000 copies, one of the few copies with the address of Humblot, bookseller, rue Saint-Jacques, near Saint-Ives. Restif started, from May 20, 1776 to compose the gynographes, the third volume of the idées singulières, which appeared at the beginning of 1777. The first part of this work contains a project of reform of the morals and the uses of the second sex, the second is a compilation of the uses and all the customs of the earth, relating to the women.
