In 1762, the condemnation of Emile by the Parliament of Paris forced Rousseau to flee France and to settle in Neuchâtel under the protection of the King of Prussia. The work is not only a manual of education, but a philosophical treatise on the goodness of human nature (Tchemerzine V, 545 and 546).
