Lugduni Batavorum (Leiden), Elzevier, 1627. In-8 : 12f., 887pp. Antique stiff vellum with flaps, handwritten title on spine. A fine copy. Joseph Scaliger was one of the greatest classical scholars. He attempted to reconstruct and correct hundreds of passages in classical texts. Perhaps his most important work was to show that the Bible and the events it relates can only be understood in the light of pagan writings and the methods of classical scholarship. The correspondence in this 1627 edition reflects his relationships with contemporary scholars and scientists, and the scholarly circles in which he moved. He corresponded with Salmasius, Heinsius, Casaubon, Lindenbrogius, Gruter, Lipsius, Labbaeus and many others.
