VILLEDIEU (Marie-Catherine-Hortense Desjardins) - Lot 762
VILLEDIEU (Marie-Catherine-Hortense Desjardins) Memoirs of the Life of Henriette-Sylvie de Molière. Paris, Barbin, 1671-72. 3 volumes in-16 : 4f., 218, / 200pp. / 208pp. / 206pp., (1) (the first two volumes dated 1671, the 3rd of 1672). Contemporary fawn calf, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt roulette on the edges, 3 corners slightly dulled, red edges. This novel-memoir narrates with a great freedom of tone, the adventures of Henriette-Sylvie de Molière confronted with various perilous situations and under the features of which are hidden allusions to the fickle wife of Molière. This novel is partly autobiographical because, like Henriette-Sylvie de Molière, the author had a tormented love life. In general, this novel is attributed to the French poetess, playwright and novelist Marie-Catherine-Hortense de Villedieu (1640-1683) but for others, Adrien-Thomas Perdou de Subligny or d'Alègre (writer publishing anonymously) would be the author. (Brunet I, 580) (Barbier III-202)
