WEIS (Jean-Martin) - [LOUIS XV] Representation... - Lot 772 - Briscadieu
WEIS (Jean-Martin) - [LOUIS XV] Representation of the Festivities given by the city of Strasbourg for the King's Convalescence, on the arrival and during the stay of his Majesty in this city. Paris, Aubert, 1744. In plano: 11/12 double plates drawn by Weis and engraved by himself and Le Bas (missing the equestrian portrait of Louis XV); 10 leaves of engraved text in rocaille frames. Old traces of moisture at the head of the plates, some paper restorations, some minor soiling. Mounted on mitre. Contemporary marbled fawn calf, smooth spine decorated, slight rubbing, black title page, triple cold fillet framing the boards, royal coat of arms on the boards, gilt roulette on the edges, red edges. This rare work immortalizes Louis XV's stay in Strasbourg from October 5 to 10, 1744 and especially the sumptuous festivities offered to celebrate the king's recovery. It was published at the expense of the city and realized by Jean-Martin Weis, draftsman and engraver from Strasbourg, with the collaboration of Le Bas, engraver of the King's Cabinet. It is one of the most beautiful books of royal celebrations of the 18th century and attests to the technical mastery of copperplate engraving and the taste of the engravers of the time.
