Hautes-Pyrénées DEVILLE (Jean Marie Joseph)... - Lot 175 - Briscadieu
Hautes-Pyrénées DEVILLE (Jean Marie Joseph) captain Annals of Bigorre. Tarbes, Lavigne, 1818. In-8 : 4f. 357pp. 1. Printed bookplate. ½ tan basane of the period, title and gilt fillets on smooth spine. Shortly precedes the "Essais Historiques sur le Bigorre" by Davezac-Macaya which will appear in 1823. If the latter is essentially historical, DEVILLE, for his part, dedicates half of his work to the modern mores of Bigorre. He takes the opportunity to settle his account with La Boulinière and his not very complaisant description of the Bigorre people. Deville was born in Tarbes in 1787. "He was a volunteer in 1803, captain of the grenadiers under the Empire, resigned at the return of the Bourbons, and was a notary in Tarbes when the Hauts-Pyrénéens chose him as their representative in 1848. (Labarère 487).
