FLORIAN (Jean Pierre CLARIS de) Fables choisies illustrées par des Artistes Japonais sous la Direction de P. Barboutau Tokio. Paris, Marpon & Flammarion (1895). 2 parts in one volume in-4 oblong: 2 titles and 28 full-page illustrations in color print, illustrations in black in the text (slight pale ring). Printed on unglued fiber paper folded with central serpents. ½ brown calf stamped with Japanese designs, color illustrated paper boards, red gilt title label on upper board (rubbing to spines, boards darkened in one corner). The artists of this remarkable publication deserve to be named: Ka-no Tomo-nobou, Kadji-Ta Han-Ko and Kou-bo-ta Tô-soui. The engraving and the printing are due to the section of the Shueisha Company named Seiboundô. There is a counterpart, although of a different format, of these Florian fables illustrated in print by Japanese artists: those of La Fontaine published in 1894 (Carteret V 79). (Carteret V 79)
