French school around 1700, follower of Philippe... - Lot 24 - Briscadieu
French school around 1700, follower of Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674) Saint James Canvas 61 x 53 cm (Misses and old restorations) James the Greater is the elder brother of the apostle John. Son of Zebedee, a fisherman on the Lake of Galilee, he was one of the first disciples called by Jesus, along with Andrew, Peter and John. With the latter two, he was present at the Transfiguration and then at the agony of Christ. After the Ascension, he left to preach in Syria, then returned to Jerusalem where he was beheaded by order of Herod Agrippa. A late legend made him the patron saint of Spain and located his burial place in Galicia, in Santiago de Compostela. Philippe de Champaigne gives him here the staff of a pilgrim, James being in the Middle Ages the patron saint of pilgrims. A version of Saint James the Greater, considered to be the original autograph by Philippe de Champaigne, was sold at Drouot-Richelieu on June 22, 2022 (60.5 x 49.5 cm). Our version, by a fine hand from de Champaigne's circle, is distinguished by softer strokes and variations in color - including a surprisingly warm accord between the blue of the eyes and that of the cloak.
