Attributed to Jules Louis Philippe Coignet (Paris, 1798 - 18 - Lot 59
Attributed to Jules Louis Philippe Coignet (Paris, 1798 - 1860) View of Vietri in the Gulf of Salerno (Amalfi Coast) Oil study on canvas 24 x 32 cm Circa 1820 Without frame This painting is a repeat of a study of the same dimensions signed by Jules Coignet, passed on June 21, 2014 under the title of Boats on a Beach. The subject is identifiable from an engraving by Carl Johan Billmark dated 1850: View of Vietri in the Gulf of Salerno. Jules Coignet was one of the great travelling landscape painters of the first half of the 19th century, famous for the plein air sketches he made in Italy in the wake of Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes. Coignet exhibited at the 1823 Salon several views taken from the Salerno area. Our painting must be contemporary.
