Baron Jan August Hendrick Leys, known as... - Lot 101 - Briscadieu
Baron Jan August Hendrick Leys, known as Henri Leys (Antwerp, 1815-1869) Study of a farm Oil on paper mounted on panel 26 x 28,5 cm In a gilded frame with palmettes Henri Leys was one of the greatest Belgian painters of his time. A student of Mathieu Van Brée and his brother-in-law Ferdinand de Brakelaer, he also frequented Delacroix's studio and was a friend of Paul Delaroche, to whom he can be compared. In Belgium, he was a pioneer of historical romanticism. Inspired by Flemish and German Renaissance painting, he composed great scenes of medieval history where the precision of the archaeological reconstruction was combined with an extreme finesse in the rendering. He thus influenced James Tissot and Lawrence Alma-Tadema, who studied with him. His fame was European and King Leopold I made him a baron.
