Gauthier (School of Nancy ?) - Lot 107
Gauthier (School of Nancy ?) Art nouveau portrait of a woman in a landscape Oil on wood, oval format 45 x 54 cm Signed on the right side Beautiful original frame in natural oak in the Art Nouveau style Characteristic of the Art Nouveau, this painting only signed "Gauthier" could be a youthful work of 1900 by Camille Gauthier (Norroy-les-Pont-à-Mousson, 1870 - Montricourt, 1963). After training at the Beaux-Arts de Nancy, Camille Gauthier entered the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1891. He was then employed for a few years by Louis Majorelle as a decorator, before setting up his own cabinet making business. No doubt the frame counts here as much as the painting to create an object whose spirit is close to the Ecole de Nancy at the time of Emile Gallé.
