FRENCH SCHOOL AROUND 1800 Portrait of Atahualpa... - Lot 189 - Briscadieu
FRENCH SCHOOL AROUND 1800 Portrait of Atahualpa (circa 1500-1533), last Inca emperor Walnut panel, one board not parqueted 34 x 25 cm (Crack). Atahualpa dethroned his half-brother and seized the Inca power in 1531. He then proudly confronted the conquistador Francesco Pizzaro, refused to convert to Christianity and to submit to Charles V. In response, the Spaniards squandered the Inca wealth before putting him to death on August 23, 1533. Our painting takes the engraving of a lost drawing of Claude Vignon (see Paola Bassani-Patch Claude Vignon 1593-1670, N°176G).
