Mr J.A. Grothe van Schellach, Rotterdam) Trained by Jan Maurits Quinkhard in Arnhem and after his beginnings in Rotterdam, Tibout Regters arrived in Amsterdam at the age of twenty-two and remained there until his death. As a draughtsman and painter, he introduces us to the upper middle class of the city, creating individual or group portraits, in an official or family setting. We are here with Jan Carel van der Muelen (?-1801), a Protestant and jurist from a family of Antwerp roots established in Utrecht. His marriage in 1747 to Cornelia Constantia Ortt van Nijenrode gave him the position of "opperboekhouder" at the Wisselbank in Amsterdam, one of the first European deposit banks. Created in 1609, this institution was under the control of the municipality of Amsterdam and was guaranteed by the States of Holland. It had a monopoly on foreign exchange in a city where all the world's wealth was in transit. Active until 1819, it was in a way the first central bank in Holland, with Jan Carel van der Muelen holding a position equivalent to that of president. He is shown here with his wife Cornelia Constantia Ortt (1727-1775) and their children: Samuel (1754-1809), standing, holds the dog, Constantia Jacoba Josina (?-1807) presents some flowers to her mother, Cornelis Elias (1756 -1812) sits on a sumptuous carpet with his rolling horse while Balthasar Jan Carel (1748-1817) enters with a drawing board under his arm. In the same year, Tibout Retgers painted another family in a similar interior and in the same format, that of Joan Ortt van Nijenrode (1721-1783), the brother of Cornelia Constancia. He is next to his wife Adriana Huydecoper (1726-1762), surrounded by their children, one of whom is holding a greyhound (see Ekkart cat. 74, repr. p. 104, coll. part., deposited at Nijenrode Castle, Breukelen). These two paintings are listed in the RKD (IB0003924 and IB00047950, private collection).
