BONNET (Charles) Works of Natural History... - Lot 50 - Briscadieu
BONNET (Charles) Works of Natural History and Philosophy. Neuchâtel, Fauche, 1779-83. 18 volumes in-8; illustrated with 56 plates (including a frontispiece) and 2 folding tables. A few small traces of worms on the corners at the foot of a few leaves, without affecting the text. Contemporary grained fawn calf, ornate smooth spines, green title-pieces, red end-pieces, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, some rubbing, marbled edges. Charles Bonnet, one of the greatest French naturalists of the 18th century, the discoverer of parthenogenesis, is considered one of the fathers of modern biology. His various works were marked by innovation and in-depth experimental research. His philosophy exerted considerable influence on the naturalists of his time, and Cuvier dedicated an important eulogy to him (Brunet I, 1103).
