Aix, David, 1777. In-12, 220 pp; a frontispiece portrait of René d'Anjou, 13 folding plates hors-texte, a few moth holes with no damage to text or figures. Untrimmed copy. ½ modern vellum, brown titling on smooth spine. Established in 1264 by Pope Urbain IV, the Fête-Dieu was first and foremost a celebration of the Eucharist. Under the patronage of King René, it was transformed into a large-scale event, with knights' tournaments, plays, parades and games all taking place in a festive atmosphere. Corpus Christi ceremonies were suspended during the French Revolution.
