WEIS (Jean-Martin) - [LOUIS XV] Représentation... - Lot 118 - Briscadieu
WEIS (Jean-Martin) - [LOUIS XV] Représentation des Fêtes donnés par la ville de Strasbourg pour la Convalescence du Roi, à l'arrivée et pendant le séjour de sa Majesté en cette ville. Paris, Aubert, 1744. In plano: 11/12 double plates drawn by Weis and engraved by himself and Le Bas (lacking the equestrian portrait of Louis XV); 10 leaves of engraved text in rocaille frames. Old traces of moisture at the head of the plates, some paper restorations, some minor soiling. Mounted on tabs. Contemporary marbled fawn calf, ornate smooth spine, slight rubbing, black title page, triple fillet à froid framing the boards, royal arms present on boards, gilt roulette on edges, red edges. This rare work immortalizes Louis XV's stay in Strasbourg from October 5 to 10, 1744, and above all the sumptuous festivities held to celebrate the King's recovery. It was published at the city's expense and produced by Jean-Martin Weis, a Strasbourg designer and engraver, with the collaboration of Le Bas, engraver to the King's Cabinet. This is one of the finest royal festive books of the 18th century, attesting to the technical mastery of copper engraving and the taste of the engravers of the period.
