North America photographs [CANADA - NORTH AMERICA PHOTOGRAPHS] A collection of approximately sixty late 19th-century albumen photographs (one dated 1878 in the plate) mounted on 31 large, flexible boards. Views of Niagara Falls (6 plates, 48x40 cm); views of sites, various waterfalls, monuments, Quebec City, Montreal, Canadian Indians, Ottawa, Canadian sports, Winnipeg and Manitoba, Cree Indians (Calgary), Kanannaskis, Rocky Mountains, salmon fishing, Victoria (Vancouver Island), Indian cemetery Some of the prints signed in the print plates by NOTMAN & SANDHAM, others by NOTMAN & SON, the remainder without specific photographers' names. Large format for the Niagara Falls prints (48x40 cm), medium format for the other prints (18x24 cm), and a few prints approx. 13x18 cm. Set of albumin prints. Some edges of large plates with folds or small tears, 2 or 3 small tears. Some plates captioned, others handwritten. Superb and rare set of 19th-century North American prints. The photographs taken by William Notman and his sons between 1856 and 1935 shaped Canadians' sense of identity during this pivotal period in their history. This Scottish photographer emigrated to Canada in 1856. In 1860, he hired Henry Sandham to assist him, becoming his partner in 1872.
