India JACQUEMONT (Victor) Voyage dans l'Inde, pendant les années 1828 à 1832. Published under the auspices of M. Guizot. Paris, Firmin Didot frères, 1841-44. 6 volumes large in-4 (including 2 atlases): "Journal" (volumes 1, 2 and 3) - "Description des Collections (volume 4), par MM. Isidore Geoffroy Saint Hilaire", etc. (heavy foxing/leather). (heavy foxing/scorched paper) - Atlas [Tome 1 (Journal plates): plates numbered 1 to 83 in black except one in color, 4 maps (India, Himalayas, author's itinerary in the Punjab, and in the Kashmir valley) - Tome 2 (Description des Collections plates): 207 plates including 27 zoological plates (25 in color) of mammals (1 to 6), birds (7 and 8), reptiles (9 to 12), fish (13 to 18), mollusks (16 to 18, number repeated), crustaceans (19 to 21), insects (1 to 3), and 180 botanical plates in black]. Some scattered spotting. ½ eggplant chagrin with period filleted corners, ornate smooth spines, long gilt romantic irons, slight depigmentation on spines. Minor rubbing. First edition of this first scientific description of Tibet and neighboring regions. Jacquemont was entrusted with a mission of naturalist exploration in the Persian Gulf and the Indian subcontinent. He describes Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and Bourbon Island, where he met Dumont d'Urville. Once in India, he visited Calcutta, Benares, Simla, Delhi, Agra, the Punjab and the Himalayas, Tibet and Kashmir. He never returned to France, as he died of dysentery in Bombay.
