Circumnavigation campaign of the frigate l'Artémise, during the years 1837, 1838, 1839 and 1840, under the command of M. Laplace. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1841-48.
4/6 volumes in-8 (the last two volumes V and VI are missing); illustrated with 2 folding maps and 23 plates hors texte (7/ 5/ 6/ 5). Occasional heavy foxing.
½ plum chagrin with filleted corners, ornate smooth spines, light rubbing.
Rare first edition illustrated with 2 engraved and colored folding maps (world map and map of British India) and engraved plates out of text.
Relation of Laplace's second expedition, whose aim was commercial and diplomatic. Numerous scientific observations, sketches and watercolors were made during the voyage (Sabin 38983).
Unfortunately, the last two volumes are missing.
