La Réunion - Autograph letter from the author MAILLARD (Louis) - [Reunion Island]. Notes on the island of Reunion (Bourbon). Paris, Dentu, 1862. 2 parts in one in-8 volume (text and appendices); illustrated with 27 plates, mostly in color, some double-page, including a map of the island and a plan of the town of St-Pierre. Copy with an original autograph letter from the author in response to a landowner's question about the description of his properties, as well as a copy of the letter addressed to the author prior to his reply. ½ glazed fawn calf signed PETIT (succ. de Simier), ribbed spine, red title page, gilt fillets, rubbing on spine and spine ends, gilt head. A fine copy, complete with all plates, with a singular correspondence concerning a dispute of description and interpretation with a colonial landowner over the compensation awarded at the time.
