MOREAU de SAINT-MÉRY (Médéric-Louis-Élie) - PONCE (Nicolas) Recueil de vues des lieux principaux de la colonie française de Saint-Domingue. Paris, Moreau de Saint-Méry ; Ponce ; Phélipeau, 1795. In folio: title leaf and 28 plates (including folding map frontispiece) with various numbering engraved by Nicolas Ponce. Worn ½ basane with corners, chips and tears on spine, jaws split. Second edition of this rare atlas. Moreau de Saint-Méry, a native of Martinique, practiced as a lawyer in Cap-Français, then became a member of the colonial council of Saint-Domingue in 1780. He spent his spare time researching the history of the island, during which he rediscovered the tomb of Christopher Columbus. He was elected deputy for Martinique to the Estates-General in 1789.
