Heavy worm damage to center fold at foot. Handwritten bookplate: Le Capitaine de Gilleperdur, adjudant major au 55ème régiment d'infanterie, ancien régiment de Condé (Aix en Provence - May 1896). Glazed marbled fawn calf, spine ribbed, red title page, initials C H C H C between compartments, leather missing at foot, wormholes, minor spotting, gilt bishop's shield at center of boards, marbled edges. Alexandre de Rhodes (1591-1660), nicknamed "the father of the romanization of Vietnamese", wrote several books, including this one in which he sheds light on Oriental trade, the Dutch and English in Java, the overland route from Surate to Rome and the temporal conditions prevailing in the kingdoms of Indochina (Indosinica 2417).
