Indochina - Ceramics - Lot 688
Indochina - Ceramics RIVIÈRE (Henri) Ceramics in the Art of the Far East. A collection of one hundred and sixty-two pieces reproduced in color from originals chosen from French and foreign museums and collections. Preface by Charles Vignier. Paris, Albert Lévy, Librairie centrale des Beaux-Arts, 1923. 2 volumes in folio in sheets; 100 color plates of ceramics from China, Korea, Luzon Islands and Japan mounted on fine paper evenly distributed throughout the two volumes. Scattered foxing on title pages. Limited edition of 300 copies on Rives paper. In full-color printed cloth folders with lace fastenings, in printed slipcases in need of restoration (some sides partly detached). Unique first edition of this impressive and important monograph. Most of the Chinese, Korean and Japanese ceramics come from private French collections, including those of Rivière himself, the famous connoisseur Raymond Koechlin, the antique dealer Garbis Kalebdjian and the couturier Jacques Doucet. This work follows Rivière's similar study of Islamic art, La Céramique dans l'art musulman (1913), and is just as beautifully produced, with the plates printed in full color.
