The House of GALARD, one of the most illustrious in Gascony, takes its name from the land of Galard, the first barony of the Condomois. Other names were added over successive generations. In the 16th generation, on November 12, 1508, François de Galard married Jeanne de Béarn, daughter and heiress of Jean III de Béarn viscount of Foix. This union was made on condition that François and his descendants would add the name and arms of Béarn to the Galard name and arms. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, several members of this family were bibliophiles, and had numerous works bound with their coat of arms, including many Pyrenean works. The family's most famous bibliophile was Count René de Béarn (René Marie Hector de Galard de Brassac de Béarn), whose library was sold at Drouot from 1920 to 1923. Comte René de Béarn had his books bound by the greatest Parisian bookbinders, notably Chambolle-Duru. Provenances: Ex-libris Biblioteca de Amadeo de Launet y Esnaola and Charles de Launet.
