Landscape with half-buried ancient ruins
Pen and brown ink wash.
Mid-sixteenth century.
19.5 x 30 cm.
This "all'antica" landscape, with imaginary Roman ruins, appears to have originated in the Venetian or Veronese milieu of the 16th century. It is reminiscent of Pitoni's drawings, intended for collections of engravings used as models for decors and giving "a romantic yet fantastic interpretation of ruins beset by weeds and ancient monuments transposed into a calm landscape of water and mountains" (Dominique Cordellier, Le Dessin à Vérone, RMN 1993).
