This drawing is a reproduction of the right-hand part of the painting composed by Jean-François de Troy in 1733 (Ottawa, National Gallery of Canada). One of the paintings that earned de Troy the nickname "French Jordaens". It is probably the work of one of his collaborators, or a project by an excellent engraver for an engraving in the "sanguine manner".
The drawing shows the nymph Syrinx, taking refuge in the arms of the old river-god Ladon, while being pursued by the faun-god Pan. Ladon, to save her, transformed her into reeds, and from one of these reeds Pan made himself a flute.
