Jacques-Antoine-Marie LEMOINE (Rouen, 1751-Paris,... - Lot 10 - Briscadieu
Jacques-Antoine-Marie LEMOINE (Rouen, 1751-Paris, 1824) Le Billet doux Pierre noire, watercolor and chalk lower right, stamped Alexandre Ananoff (Lugt 3365). 39.3 x 31.5 cm. Circa 1780. Antique gilt stick. Son of a notary, Lemoine was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Descamps, before joining the Académie royale de peinture in Paris, where he was taught by Lagrenée le Jeune. The composition of our drawing is reminiscent of other Lemoine leaves, such as Mme Vigée-Lebrun lisant dans un parc (private collection) or Portrait de la comtesse Potocka et de ses enfants (1783), all of which feature a similar natural background and a similar rendering of fabrics or vegetation. The face of this beautiful woman is reminiscent of that of the famous actress Rosalie Duthé, as portrayed by Périn-Salbreux - which might suggest that our gallant image corresponds to a theatrical scene. It should be noted that this drawing belonged to the collection of the famous expert Alexandre Ananoff, a Boucher and Fragonard specialist in his day, but also an astronautics enthusiast (he helped Hergé with his research).
