XVIIIth CENTURY LANGUEDOC ECOLE A RARE ANTI-CLERICAL... - Lot 11 - Briscadieu
XVIIIth CENTURY LANGUEDOC ECOLE A RARE ANTI-CLERICAL CARICATURE OF AN OC COUNTRY Moussou lou beritable pourte clef de la très Sainte Case Sanguine. Inscribed in langue d'oc in pen and brown ink on the left. 18th century. 17.5 x 15 cm. Energetically drawn by a skilled draftsman, this rare caricature gives a high-ranking clergyman - characterized by his skullcap - the air of a jubilant devil or faun, with his mischievous eye, hooked witch's nose and pointed satirical ears. The inscription in langue d'oc indicates a southern origin. This amusing anti-Catholic charge may well have originated in one of the Protestant hotbeds of southern France.
