A RARE ANTI-CLERICAL CARICATURE OF AN OC COUNTRY

Inscribed in langue d'oc in pen and brown ink on the left.
18th century.
17.5 x 15 cm.
Energetically drawn by a skilled draftsman, this rare caricature gives a high-ranking clergyman - characterized by his skullcap - the air of a jubilant devil or faun, with his mischievous eye, hooked witch's nose and pointed satirical ears. The inscription in langue d'oc indicates a southern origin. This amusing anti-Catholic charge may well have originated in one of the Protestant hotbeds of southern France.
