Josef KRIEHUBER (Vienna, 1800-1876) Portrait... - Lot 25 - Briscadieu
Josef KRIEHUBER (Vienna, 1800-1876) Portrait of a Sixteen-Year-Old Aristocrat, 1831 Watercolor over pencil lines signed on the right and dated 1831. 23 x 18 cm. Fine original gilt frame with palmettes. A pupil of the Imperial Academy in Vienna from the age of thirteen, Josef Kriehuber became one of the most sought-after and highly paid portrait painters in Austrian society during the Biedermeier period. He left thousands of portraits, either in watercolor or lithography, a technique he practiced with virtuosity from the moment he was introduced (he produced 3,000!). All the celebrities of the time passed under his pencil: Emperor Franz Joseph, Prince Metternich, Josef Radetzky, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, and a good part of the Central European aristocracy. A certain tendency to embellish his models is said to have contributed to his success. Competing with photography towards the end of his career, he died in poverty. The Albertina in Vienna preserves many of his portraits.
