18th CENTURY FRENCH ECOLE A pike Original... - Lot 68 - Briscadieu
18th CENTURY FRENCH ECOLE A pike Original canvas. 50 x 151.5 cm. (Old restorations). This spectacular painting undoubtedly celebrates the miraculous catch of a monstrous pike (some individuals measure up to one meter 30!). The animal is placed on the shore, on a bed of kelp, in front of a background of dune and sea, painted in a way that Courbet would not have disavowed. Because of this setting, we propose to attribute the painting to a skilled specialist in fish still lifes, Abraham van Beyeren, who often depicted the product of fishing against a seascape background. Probably trained by his brother-in-law Pieter de Putter, another master of the genre, Van Beyeren worked in Leiden, The Hague, Delft, Amsterdam and finally Oveschie. He was also a painter of flowers, and rarely signed his works.
