Portrait of a Captain in Napoleon I's Imperial Guard Horse Chasseurs

This lot comes from the same estate as lot n°87 "Portrait of a mother and her five children".
Our man wears a pelisse and a dolman with three chevrons of rank on the sleeves. The sabretache, with large imperial arms, is again an officer's model, as is the shabrack, in leopard. He wears a plume collar in the unit's colors. The saber, too, is a Guards mounted chasseur officer's model, and the rest of the regiment can be seen in the background. Our man wears the Légion d'honneur on his dolman and pelisse, presumably an officer's insignia. The identity of our man is unfortunately undetermined, but the date on the canvas suggests that he was one of the captains appointed in February 1813 (Barbanegre, Achintre, Assant, Oudinot fils, Deville, Guy, de Kleinenberg, Rocourt, Spitzer, Decoux and Lemercier).
76 officers were captains in the regiment, which was not only an elite unit of the French cavalry, but was also responsible for protecting the sovereign. In art history, the Chasseurs à Cheval de la Garde were popularized by Géricault's portrait of Lieutenant Dieudonné, exhibited at the 1812 Salon.
